Bantucinema Reviews: Uncle Drew (2018) *NO SPOILERS*
REVIEWED BY: BUCK RIVERS
Cinema Score: 5/10

Bantu Score: A Fantastic Voyage
Uncle Drew was a really good time! It was super cheesy, and had some fun twists and turns, but is held back by an “Emotional” message that wasn’t conveyed nearly as well as they think it was.
In terms of Cinema, Uncle Drew is very average. The dialogue has its high points in terms of comedy, but is far too cliche when it is trying to be emotional. There are a million quotes that we’ve all heard before, and they are spoken like inspirational lines of drama. “You don’t stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.” “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Etc.
The comedy is done pretty well, which is a must for this type of family film. The casting was very good for the main crew. Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie all portray their elderly characters well. They are hilarious under that make up, and it is clear they are having a great time. Tiffany Haddish, and Nick Kroll play basically the characters you expect from them, but last I checked, it hasn’t gotten old just yet. Sadly, Lil Rel Howery is the only cast member who I felt wasn’t really bringing it. It seemed like this was a character written for somebody else. He spent most of the film just being against everything. At some point, you gotta go with the flow. His constant complaining got old by the midway point.
In terms of having a good time, the film is a reasonably consistent ride. The jokes are paced well, and they don’t resort to low brow humor or constantly repeating gags. These actors are giving it their all and it shows. Not every joke sticks the landing, but there was never more than a couple minutes between big laughs in my theater.
This is truly a family film, even though it wasn’t really advertised as one.
The basketball is all thrilling and is shot in a way that puts you in the game. The theater was in uproar throughout every major game scene.
Speaking of uproar in the theater, in terms of Blackness, this movie is right up your ally! The Black folks in this theater were having a great time! There was so much energy here. The humor in particular was based around the best and funniest parts of our culture and we all felt it. The church scene in particular is a standout. Of course, this being a basketball movie, niggas were out of their seats! I had a great time, and so did everyone in there.
The film also had a bomb soundtrack. When you’ve got Fantastic Voyage and Let it Whip in your movie, we all know this is a proud Black movie.
All in all, Uncle Drew is definitely a good time at the movies. It falls short here and there, especially when it is trying to be deep, but other than that, it is surely something worth checking out.
